Good Fences And Non-Conforming Use in Albemarle
First, the Blue Ridge Swim Club pool, located in Ivy in a (by others’ standards) rural part of Charlottesville/Albemarle has the opportunity for another phase of its long life.
Albemarle County planning commissioners voted Tuesday in favor of allowing a summer camp to take up residence at the Ivy-based Blue Ridge Swim Club— one of the country’s oldest continually operating commercial swimming pools supplied by natural waters.
…If approved by the supervisors, the changes would require the police to determine if the music is audible 100 feet from a vineyard’s property line or within a neighbor’s building. … I live in a cookie-cutter development next to a soccer field, baseball diamonds, playgrounds and a pool; if Crozet Park were up for some kind of redevelopment, I’m sure I’d be upset.
Slightly Less Development at Cherry/Ridge Intersection
From the Daily Progress : Charlottesville’s City Council rejected a proposal Tuesday that would have modified the development plan for the William Taylor Plaza mixed-used project at the corner of Cherry Avenue and Ridge Street. The council voted 3-2 to reject changes proposed by the developer that would have expanded the project’s overall size and modified an affordable housing agreement included in the original plan. … The rezoning application filed by Southern Development would have increased the number of residences from 50 to 80 units and expanded the project’s size by 10,000 square feet, bringing its total to 110,000 square feet.
…While I appreciate the sentiment, this statement shows a disconnect from reality: “I think affordable housing should come from the heart, and not for the need for low-income tax credits,†saidCouncilor Holly Edwards.
Redfields Neighborhood Growing?
This is as good a time as any to remind people that if you don’t own that open space over there it’s liable to eventually become something you don’t like .
… Local developer Gaylon Beights has petitioned the county to allow him to develop a 58-acre site as a new phase of Redfields. Some neighbors say they were promised that the land, located in Albemarle’s rural area, would be preserved as open space and they want the county to put the brakes on the planning for the 138-home rezoning. … Virginia is a caveat emptor state, which means that the onus of responsibility is ultimately on the buyer to do his or her due diligence when investigating a property.

Albemarle County Planning Commission denies new development near the Ashcroft neighborhood . This seems to be as good a time as any to remind those who are seeking to buy in Charlottesville or Albemarle (or anywhere, really) that if you don’t own it, it’s going to change . Never assume that that field/cul-de-sac/dead end is going to stay that way. Is the decision good/bad/ugly?
